Legacy of Panda Passage
With less than 1,800 giant pandas left in the wild and given their extremely low birth rate by natural means, captive breeding programs are vital in order to sustain the panda population.
Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue, are twin giant pandas currently living in Panda Passage, at the Calgary Zoo. Born at the Toronto Zoo on October 13, 2015, their names reflect their Canadian birthplace – Jia Panpan, a male, translates to Canadian Hope, while the female’s name, Jia Yueyue, means Canadian Joy.
In addition to helping conserve pandas, the $14.4 billion dollar enclosure that was created for the panda’s habitat has won an award issued by an international conservation group called the ‘International Living Future Institute’ for its sustainable building.
“Panda Passage successfully incorporates beauty, biophilia, conservation, health, equity and education at the intersection of species,” the institute said in a release. “We hope the exhibit inspires others to appreciate the beauty and importance of nature and consider these principles in their work and everyday lives.
