Legacy of Grandfathers
During this week, June 6th marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the critical turning point in the second World War when more than 160,000 allied personnel landed on the beaches of Normandy in northern France. This important milestone conjured up thoughts of the brave men and women who played a part in securing freedom for so many people.
This painting was inspired by a picture that accompanied a Boston Globe article, on May 30, 2019. The caption reads: “A Normandy farmer offered a glass of Calvados to a British paratrooper from the Sixth Division’s Hampshire Regiment near the villages of Ornes and Dives in northwestern France, where the British were dropped in the first hours of Operation Overlord on D-Day. Calvados is a very delicious, but sneakily potent, drink that’s made by distilling apple cider from this particular region of France. I enjoyed sipping it while we toured Normandy, so a couple of bottles made their way into my luggage for the return trip home. I will pour a glass now, with deep reverence and gratitude for the legacy left by so many of our grandfathers…
