Introducing… Legacy 52

A new year, a new project… Introducing

Legacy 52

———————-

Legacy: leg·a·cy /ˈleɡəsē/
noun: legacy; plural noun: legacies
1: a gift by will especially of money or other personal property
2: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past

The word ‘legacy’ is often associated with the death of an individual. Usually it refers to what the deceased person leaves behind for their next of kin, such as money, property or gifts. Sometimes called an inheritance, it’s something passed down through generations, or received from the past.

In this project, however, I use ‘legacy’ in a broader, more holistic sense. Here, it is not restricted to what’s left by the dead, for only a few individuals. Rather, I think of legacies as something being created every moment by each and every one of us.

We create our legacy on a daily basis, by the actions we choose to take, as well as our inertia. Interactions with people, animals, plants, the earth, and things in our environment, all play a crucial role in establishing a legacy. The words we speak and the choices we make also contribute to shaping our legacies.

Since we are all actively creating our legacies, the impacts can be experienced by those currently alive, as well as by future generations, if our contributions and shared gifts happen to live on after we are gone.

Through this Legacy 52 project, I hope to achieve a few things:

I want to highlight some ‘unsung’ legacies, whether they’re from the past, or are currently being created and shared.

I’d like to bring to conscious awareness some of the legacies that may have been forgotten about, are taken for granted, or perhaps, have not been thought of as a legacy before.

I hope to demonstrate courageous, excellent leadership. Dolly Parton said, “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader.”

I hope to share my artistic gifts in ways that enlighten and entertain the readers.

“If you know when you have enough, you are wealthy
If you carry your intentions to completion, you are resolute
If you live a long and creative life, you will leave an eternal legacy.”
